Meta Business Agent Has a Brand Problem
Verdict: Right product, wrong brand — againKeith Brown · Growth & Leadership
Sep 12, 2026
I told Facebook this in 2016, when they talked to me about running marketing for Workplace. Ten years later it's the same company making the same mistake with a much better product.
On June 3, 2026, at its Conversations conference in London, Meta launched Meta Business Agent — an AI agent that answers customers, recommends products and closes sales across WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, sold under a new subscription brand called Meta One. The product is good. The distribution is enormous. The name is the problem, and the name is the part nobody at Meta seems willing to fix.
Here is the pattern, and it has held for more than a decade: everything Meta has grown outside social networking, it bought and left alone. Instagram in 2012. WhatsApp in 2014. Oculus in 2014. Three acquisitions, three brands kept intact, three products that became enormous. Everything Meta has launched into a non-social category under its own name has struggled to be taken seriously by the buyer it needed — and business buyers are the least forgiving audience there is.
The 2016 conversation
In 2016, Facebook came to me about Head of Marketing for Workplace, their enterprise product. I want to be clear about why I took the meeting: it was Facebook, and in 2016 Facebook was one of the fastest-growing companies in the world. I loved the job I already had and had no intention of leaving it. I was curious, and curiosity about a company like that was reason enough to spend an hour.
What I told them in that hour is what I'd tell them today: the product could be excellent and it still wouldn't work under the Facebook brand. An IT director does not want to explain to a board that internal communications now run on Facebook. The objection isn't rational and it doesn't need to be. Brand is the story the buyer has to tell someone else, and that story was already written.
The answer I got back was the one you always get: the product will speak for itself. It rarely does. Products speak to people who already agreed to listen.
Why 'Meta One' doesn't solve it
Meta One is a sub-brand, not a brand. It inherits the parent's meaning instead of building its own, which is exactly what Instagram and WhatsApp were never asked to do. Nobody thinks about Menlo Park when they open WhatsApp, and that is precisely why WhatsApp is now the channel Business Agent runs on.
The irony is hard to miss: the distribution advantage Meta is using to launch this product comes entirely from brands it bought and kept separate. The lesson was in the building the whole time.
What a business buyer is actually deciding
A small business owner handing customer conversations to an AI agent is making a trust decision, not a feature decision. They are asking who sees the messages, who owns the relationship, and what happens if the incentives of the platform and the incentives of my shop ever diverge.
For a company whose revenue comes from advertising, those questions don't have comfortable answers, and the brand is what asks them before the sales page gets a word in. That's a permanent tax on acquisition cost, paid in every single deal.
December 2027
By the end of 2027, Meta Business Agent is renamed, folded into WhatsApp Business, or quietly wound down — and it is not a material revenue line for Meta. It won't work for the same reason nothing Facebook or Meta has built outside its core business has worked. The things that grew were bought and left alone. This one carries the parent's name, and the name is what the buyer has to explain to someone else.
Do this instead
If you're launching something outside the category your name already means, give it its own name. The alternative isn't a slower start — it's paying the brand gap in acquisition cost on every deal, forever. That decision costs nothing at $3M in revenue and is close to unfixable at $300M.
